VOSTOK PRESS is an independent publishing house based in Seoul. Korea. It publishes a bimonthly photography magazine, VOSTOK, and books on arts and photography. VOSTOK PRESS organizes exhibitions and events, directs lectures and workshops. It also carries out projects for institutions and private companies.

From self-portraits to selfies, this issue examines the images of the self that coexist in the contemporary moment, as well as the process of constructing one’s own image. Within this terrain are creators who struggle with themselves and come to terms with themselves—who hate themselves and cherish themselves, who cannot endure themselves yet ultimately embrace themselves. Through such sensitive and attentive engagements with the self, we encounter a rich spectrum of “images of me.”

Alongside these works, the issue brings together photographic practices that critically investigate the images and visual environments that exert an immense influence on the formation of self-identity. It also includes criticism, essays, and interviews that reflect on the meaning of looking at oneself and of creating one’s own image.

As we move through this journey of photographs and texts, there is one thing worth holding onto: although we live in an age saturated with images—selfies included—there are still people for whom the act of forming and claiming “their own image” remains an urgent necessity.
