VOSTOK PRESS is an independent publishing house based in Seoul. Korea. It publishes a bimonthly photography magazine, VOSTOK, and books on arts and photography. VOSTOK PRESS organizes exhibitions and events, directs lectures and workshops. It also carries out projects for institutions and private companies.

Vostok Magazine, Issue 18. This issue is devoted to voices—voices long concealed or suppressed in a male-centered world, the voices of women, and the voices of sexual minorities that have been ignored or erased within a society governed by norms of “normality.” Through photographs and texts, these voices are brought into the open.

These voices speak of discrimination and hatred experienced simply for being born into a female body, or for living with an identity that differs from the majority. They denounce the violence produced by a world ruled by rigid binaries—male and female, normal and abnormal. They declare, to themselves and to the world, that they will no longer be hidden or silenced, no longer ignored or erased.

The act of giving voice to what has long been held in is also the act of revealing bodies once concealed—a moment in which a resolute will comes sharply into focus. “I am not yours.” With an urgency born of no longer being able to live as anything other than oneself, and a fierce desire to finally live as who one truly is, this issue captures with clarity the voices and gestures pressed firmly into being.
