VOSTOK PRESS is an independent publishing house based in Seoul. Korea. It publishes a bimonthly photography magazine, VOSTOK, and books on arts and photography. VOSTOK PRESS organizes exhibitions and events, directs lectures and workshops. It also carries out projects for institutions and private companies.

The eighth issue of VOSTOK Magazine focuses on faces in photography and the diverse practices and critical discourses that surround them. From the moment humans first held a camera, one of their most devoted pursuits has been photographing one another’s faces. When we encounter the cool, fixed gazes of those captured in photographs, we are often seized by a peculiar sensation—one that may be pleasure, longing, or even jealousy and desire.

VOSTOK Magazine delves into the distinctive worlds of photographers from Korea and abroad who obsessively photograph the face—at once intimate, unfamiliar, and uncanny—or who choose instead to conceal it entirely within their work. The issue also features essays by various writers who approach the meaning of facial imagery in photography from personal, historical, and social perspectives. Beyond the special feature, readers will find an essay by poet Oh Eun, an interview with artist Nikki S. Lee, a new serialized column by visual culture researcher Yoon Won-hwa, and an in-depth look at photobook design by graphic designer Park Yeon-joo, among many other rich texts and visual materials.
