Such chilling loneliness, and yet such sweet solitude.
In photographs, everyone becomes alone.
Isn’t photography, in some ways, an act of being alone? VOSTOK Magazine Issue No. 12, “Everyone, Alone,” quietly follows those who find themselves alone both inside and outside the frame. From the photographer’s transparent images—slowly engaging in an intimate dialogue with objects placed within their own room—to stories of individuals who grow even lonelier amid the crowd, the issue unfolds a rich spectrum of photographic works by fourteen photographers of diverse nationalities.
In addition, essays by poet Yoo Gye-young, chef Park Chan-il, and proofreader-turned-novelist Kim Jung-sun, along with distinctive criticism and reportage, come together with the photographs to form a delicately composed feature. Beyond the special theme, the issue is further enriched by a conversation between designers Jung Byung-gyu and Jung Jae-wan, who worked on two books by architect Kim Chung-up published in 1984 and 2018 respectively, as well as ongoing columns by film critic Yoo Un-sung and visual culture researcher Yoon Won-hwa.
